Istanbul, Turkey -- Bishop Hilarion (Rudnik), assistant bishop for Metropolitan Epiphanios of Spain and Portugal of the Constantinople Patriarchate and a Ukrainian citizen, was detained at the Istanbul airport and spent some hours at the Istanbul police department on 9 June 2005. The Turkish police suspected the bishop of faking documents and cooperating with Chechen rebels. cerkva.org.ua posted the news on 18 June.
Turkish security conducted a complete search, taking Bishop Hilarion from Ataturk Airport to the police department. The consul of Ukraine in Istanbul personally came to the police department to attest to the authenticity of the bishops personal documents. The Turkish police refused to release him, claiming that he no longer had permission to be in Portugal. Bishop Hilarion was only released after the consul of Ukraine contacted the Portuguese Embassy in Ankara and the minister of foreign relations of Turkey to receive confirmation that the bishop is legally staying in Portugal. According to cerkva.org.ua, the arrest raised several questions, in particular because Bishop Hilarion was the interpreter at the 8 June meeting between Patriarch Bartholomew of Constantinople and Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko, in which the question of autonomy for the Ukrainian church was discussed.
