Staff
at Hoppou-kan, an educational facility in Nemuro,
Hokkaido, periodically scan Suisho Island in the
Habomai group with binoculars and found the
building on Nov. 8. Workers
left the island Sunday, and no one has landed
there since. The island now has a building with a
domed roof and a cross on top, which the center
believes to be a Russian Orthodox church. Suisho
Island, about 7 km off Cape Nosappu, has an
observation post and a radar facility. Only
Russian border guards live there. Japan
has long demanded the return from Russia of the
islands of Kunashiri, Etorofu and Shikotan and the
Habomai islets. Koizumi
seeks trust
Prime
Minister Junichiro Koizumi said Thursday he will
try to build confidence between Japan and Russia
at an upcoming summit with Russian President
Vladimir Putin, even if the two leaders cannot
issue a new political document on the countries'
territorial row.
